The Western States Hockey League has released their initial schedule for the 2021-22 season, posting it on their website as of September 21st. The schedule features the ten teams for this season, with the dormancy of the Vancouver Devils taking place. Teams are slated for about a 40-game season, though that may be subject to adjustment, based on the initial game totals, and the possibility of a Showcase.
With the schedule release, there appears to be a placeholder for a Showcase this season. Traditionally, the WSHL holds the league-wide Showcase in Las Vegas, but with possible border travel restrictions and with only having ten teams, it will be something to keep an eye on. To end the season, the league appears to be banking on the COVID-19 situation to be within control and the borders open for travel as there is a two-week “Canada/USA Showdown.”
The WSHL season is currently set to begin on October 29th and with the release of their regular season schedule, it appears they are still hopeful for having enough players to complete a season. However, time will tell. Especially given the roster numbers that we are currently seeing and the rumors of players “jumping ship” due to these low roster numbers heading into October, just a few weeks before the puck is suppose to drop for game one.
