For the first time in months, the St. John’s Junior Hockey League saw pucks on the ice and goals fill the net. It was a big weekend for the league as they kicked off their 41st season. We’ve seen numerous teams and leagues shut down or forgo their season so it’s nice to see something positive.
There were six games that took place last weekend but unfortunately, new restrictions suspended the season as quickly as it started. Stay tuned for any updated news put out by the SJJHL.
WHL Turns Rink into Hotel
Due to Canadian and United States restrictions, the WHL has been forced to adapt in order to keep their season alive. Team travel has been restricted meaning the Red Deer Rebels have forgone their billet families for an ice rink.
The team has hunkered down in Red Deer, Alberta for their condensed, 24-game season. For many kids, this is truly a dream come true. Who wouldn’t want to sleep in a press-box, wake up, and go play hockey 35 feet from where you slept?
The WHL season is expected to start on February 26 without fans. For the league’s United States teams, they’ll begin the season on March 19, depending on approval from the state of Washington.
