Coaches… Lets get some of the tires, cones and obstacles off the ice and when we have the man power and help, use our coaches to provide the obstacles our athletes need during the drills.
One of my biggest pet peeves as both a coach on the ice or as a parent watching my sons practices is seeing assistant coaches or helpers leaning against the boards. Practices sessions are short, and they are a great opportunity for coaches to be actively involved and integrated into the practice.
Take a look at these two clips in the videos to see active resistance happening with the coaches we have working the drills in these simple puck protection scenarios.
These and other drills can be a great way for kids to gauge distance and pressure, play with their heads up and much more. They are great for:
- Puck Protection Drills
- Stickhandling drills
- Shooting through or around
- Passing around or away from
- Escaping out of an area or space
- Give and Go Concepts
- and much more…
Incorporate this in your next practice! Get your coaches involved and the players (and the parents) will see and feel the difference in your practices!
